New Support Group

DISCLAIMER: Our groups are peer-run and should not be treated as a substitute for psychiatric or other professional mental health care.

Writing can help you make sense of emotional upheavals and give you a sense of accomplishment as you recover and grow after an episode. You will meet with peers who understand what it is like to go through the disease. Bring a paper and a writing implement because you will write.

Beginning on April 9, 2009, DBSA South Orange County will be sponsoring a support group called Writing for People Living with Mood Disorders. Based on the work of Elizabeth Schaefer, Judy Reeves, and Natalie Goldberg, the biweekly sessions seek to help people to express issues related to their recovery through writing. Participants are expected to bring paper and a writing implement or a laptop computer. Patients and families are both welcome.

The group will meet on the 2nd and 4th Thursdays of each month at 6 PM at the Foothill Ranch Library, 27002 Cabriole, Foothill Ranch, CA 92610. For directions, please call 949-683-9211 or write to dbsasoc [at] alsirat [dot] com.

Note that this is not a read and critique group. You will write on the spot. Sharing is optional.

PEER CONNECTIONSIndianapolis — Cultural & Cosmopolitan
Indianapolis is more than just a mecca for Indy 500 racing fans. Learn more about this vibrant city in our Hotel & Travel Center. As The Washington Post notes, the city has “10 world-class sports venues [but] that is just a fraction of its cultural institution tally: 14 museums, 21 galleries & 25 performing arts centers & theaters.”

And our conference will be just minutes away from these attractions at the beautiful downtown Hyatt Regency Hotel! We have reserved a block of rooms at a special rate for our conference attendees. For all the details on these rates—or to make room reservations online—visit our Hotel & Travel Center.

Growing Lineup of Renowned Speakers
DBSA and the chapters involved in the 2009 Conference Committee are in the process of selecting and/or finalizing our conference presenters…and we hope to have exciting news for you shortly! Currently confirmed are the following leading experts & advocates:

* Darby Penney (community integration advocate, author)
* David Granirer (stand-up comic, counselor, author)
* Victoria Maxwell (actress, playwright, educator, consultant)
